PM Mitsotakis chats with FT climate editor Mychasuk at Energy Transition Summit

The Greek government is very concerned about the escalation of clashes between Israel and Iran, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis told Financial Times (FT) climate editor Emiliya Mychasuk on Wednesday at the "Energy Transition Summit: East Med & Southeast Europe" held by the FT and Kathimerini at the Four Seasons Astir Palace Hotel over June 17-18.

Speaking of the Israel-Iran crisis, Mitsotakis added that Greece insists on two points: Iran should not acquire a nuclear weapons arsenal, while the resolution of the conflict must come through diplomacy. Only the United States can bring both sides to the table, he said. On Gaza, the Greek PM expressed great concern over the humanitarian crisis and said the unobstructed flow of humanitarian aid must be guaranteed.

Referring to the importance of nuclear energy discussed at the summit, Mitsotakis said that he saw no reason to reach climate neutrality without it, and Greece should be part of the discussion on nuclear technology, particularly investments in it, as well as examine if it would be useful in shipping a decade from now.

The premier also said that the government's main concern domestically was how to increase disposable income, and asserted that, based on polls, ruling New Democracy could achieve a third term in power, as long as its commitments to its voters are met.
