ESEE: Greece among top EU markets for TEMU and SHEIN; warns of unfair competition

The President of the Hellenic Confederation of Commerce and Entrepreneurship (ESEE) Stavros Kafounis, in a press conference held on Wednesday, presented the updated data of the Confederation's study on the impact of unequal competition against European and Greek commercial enterprises from Asian e-commerce platforms.
He also emphasised that additional measures are necessary to create a fair competitive environment with major e-commerce platforms from third countries.
According to the data presented, Greece in the period 2023-2024 was among the top markets for TEMU and SHEIN. Based on inbound micro-bundles with an average value of 25 euros, the estimated turnover in Greece stands at 627 million euros. This means that the TEMU and SHEIN platforms occupy 20.9% of the Greek e-commerce market, estimated at EUR 3 billion. The estimated turnover in Greece based on active users and the average annual value of purchases per active user is estimated at EUR 529 million. This means that the TEMU and SHEIN platforms account for 17.63% of the Greek e-commerce market, estimated at EUR 3 billion.
According to Confederation, micro-debits entering the EU in 2024 from third countries also reached 4.6 billion, of which 91% came from China, and are expected to reach six billion in 2025. The TEMU and SHEIN platforms have come under the EU's spotlight due to the rapid growth in active monthly users and the unfair commercial practices they are alleged to use. They are included in the list of Very Large Online Platforms (VLOPs) and are expected to comply with the regulatory framework of the Digital Services Act (DSA).
