Shipping ministry calls on merchant marine sailors to end strike on Greece-Italy lines

The Maritime Affairs & Insular Policy Ministry issued a formal statement relating to the ongoing strike by the Panhellenic Union of Merchant Marine Sailor (PENEN), which has significantly interrupted the schedules on the Greece-Italy line.

According to the statement, the ministry has taken all the appropriate legal and administrative actions to restore normalcy and legality. Following the issuing of a court decision terming the strike illegal, port authorities recorded cases of non-compliance and notified the prosecutor of Patras' office, which drew a related case file.

The Maritime Affairs & Insular Policy Ministry reminded that according to current legislation, every entity that incurs losses has the right to compensation from both individuals breaking the law as well as from legal entities participating in illegal actions.

The shipping minister has already ratified the collective labor agreement that foresees wage raises for the Adriatic ship crews, in agreement with the Association of Passenger Shipping Enterprises (SEEN) and the Panhellenic Seamen's Federation (PNO). The ministry underlined the need to respect court decisions and calls on PENEN to act responsibly before passengers and contribute to safeguarding the interests of Greek seamen.
