Stournaras: Tax changes in favour of employees

Bank of Greece governor Yannis Stournaras proposed changes in taxation to benefit salaried employees, in an interview with public broadcaster ERT on Tuesday.
Stournaras emphasised, among other things, that "we need to review the entire system in favour of salaried employees, of course, because they are treated unfairly in Greece. Therefore, if changes are to be made, they should benefit employees and the labour market."
According to him, a comprehensive reform of the tax system is necessary. "We need to look at everything together - the tax system, the rates, the tax exemptions, and the benefits," he stated, adding that "we need a white paper here, as is sometimes done in the UK on taxation. To see where we stand today, and what changes can be made that will improve both growth and social justice."
Stournaras estimated that tax evasion has decreased significantly in recent years, citing the reduction in the amount of cash used in the economy as a clear indication of this.
