A fire that broke out midday in a forested area in Ano Souli of Marathonas, on the east coast of Attica, is abating as of Monday evening.

The fire broke out around 13:30, and two 112 emergency message were issued, at 13:47 and 14:15, warning residents of Grammatiko to be on alert for evacuation and then calling on Ano Souli and Marathonas residents to evacuate preventatively.

A total of 140 firefighters with 38 fire trucks, 5 units on foot, and 11 aircraft with 7 helicopters were involved in putting the fire out. In addition, firefighters were assisted by many volunteers, drivers volunteering the use of their vehicles, and the mobile operations center 'Olympos' that coordinated the effort. Local investigators and arson specialists are looking into the causes.

The Fire Department reminded citizens to be particularly careful in cases of fires and follow authorities' directions faithfully.
