Tsoukalas: The myth of imported inflation is collapsing

"In Europe, inflation is declining, while here it is increasing. Therefore, the myth of imported inflation, on which New Democracy has built its narrative, is collapsing," said main opposition PASOK-Movement for Change spokesperson Kostas Tsoukalas in an interview with the public broadcaster ERT on Monday.
He stated that "a profit-driven inflation has been constructed, meaning that the profits of listed companies have reached 2007 levels, property prices have also reached 2007 levels," while the only things remaining in a state of deflation are wages and daily earnings. "And we see that with the current tax scale, which hasn't changed in six years, there is a significant transfer of money from salaried employment to the profitability of certain businesses. This is the core issue around which today’s social needs are forming," he added.
Regarding the major issue of rising rent prices, he underlined that PASOK has been saying for three years that only a surge in the supply of social housing can bring prices down. "Everything else is a half-measure," he argued.
Tsoukalas concluded that "the important thing is for a social alliance to be formed, one that can express itself in a dominant and victorious way against New Democracy." He added, "We believe that this social alliance can only be expressed through PASOK. Why? Because right now, our country is an example to be avoided compared to the rest of Europe."
