Hatzidakis: Inflation is a European problem

Deputy Prime Minister Kostis Hatzidakis in an interview with the Sunday newspaper REALNEWS referred to the battle against high prices. "Inflation is a European problem and continues to put real pressure on household budgets. Compared to other EU countries, we are more or less at the average level. The government, of course, has not remained inactive. We are steadily strengthening citizens’ incomes. In terms of Greeks’ real income, we have risen from 60% of the EU average to 70%. And at the European level, we rank between 14th and 17th place".
He said that the government "We are introducing new features for the e-Consumer platform to make it more user-friendly for citizens, allowing them to even do their shopping through the system. Additionally, we have made it mandatory to label products that are sold in smaller packages, so that consumers can have more complete information.  However, I especially want to highlight our initiative for producer-only farmers’ markets. This is a tool to help reduce the price gap from the field to the shelf. All of these are modernisation initiatives that make life easier for consumers," he added.

On the issue of water scarcity Hatzidakis highlights the data: "Greece, unfortunately, currently ranks 19th in the world in terms of water scarcity risk, while at the same time, 80% of our water is used for irrigation. These are two critical factors that show why the National Water Management Plan is an absolute priority. This plan is already under development and will include several key pillars: accelerating necessary projects, such as dams; drastically reducing losses from water supply networks; utilizing new technologies such as desalination; adopting a new water management model at the national level, etc. And all of this will be done with full respect for the Constitution, which rightly considers water a public good. We are aiming to address the issue comprehensively and with the seriousness it demands, also responding to climate change, which is severely affecting the Mediterranean".
