Lekkas to ANA-MPA: The seismic activity is completely normal and expected

The president of the Earthquake Planning and Protection Organisation (OASP), Professor of Natural Disasters Efthymios Lekkas, described the recent seismic activity observed in the country as completely normal and expected emphasising that these earthquakes are in no way related to one another.
In an interview with Athens-Macedonian News Agency (ANA-MPA) on Sunday, Lekkas said that "The seismic activity we have observed in recent months across many different parts of the country is completely normal and expected, based on the geotectonic potential of the broader region in which Greece is located. It must be emphasised that these earthquakes are in no way related to each other and stem from tectonic activity on independent fault lines. Statistically, in our country, we expect one to two earthquakes with a magnitude greater than 6 on the Richter scale approximately every 1.5 years. This frequency is an average, and therefore the current seismic activity fully justifies the “ lull” that preceded it over the past 2-3 years"
Speaking about the environmental situation in the Attica region, Lekkas highlighted that over the past 20 years, there has been a loss of approximately 70% of forested areas - a massive percentage that directly affects the lungs of the capital and simultaneously increases the risk of flooding. "Effective protection is ensured through a combination of actions. These actions include: frequent patrols with manned crews and the use of new technology; inspections of the HEDNO (Hellenic Electricity Distribution Network Operator) networks; enforcement of the law requiring the clearing of privately owned plots - at least those adjacent to forested areas; organized and immediate intervention through the cooperation of the fire service, local and regional authorities, as well as volunteer units; and public information and awareness campaigns", he said.
