Balkan Forum – Livanios: Improvement of Greece's border stations a top priority

Interior Minister Theodoros Livanios, described the improvement of the country’s border stations as a top priority. Referring to the upgrade projects of the main land border checkpoints, he noted that "the land customs station of Kipi, in Evros, on the Greek-Turkish border, is being upgraded through large-scale works worth 13 million euros," and announced that "by the summer of 2026, the Kipi station will be functionally, aesthetically, and spatially upgraded", in a broadcast message to the Balkan Forum organised by the Interior Ministry on Friday in Thessaloniki.

At the same time, he noted that the reconstruction of the Evzoni border station - the country’s largest border crossing - is also progressing rapidly, with the project’s budget estimated to exceed 22 million euros. “ We hope that within the year a contractor will be selected, and that within 14 months from the signing of the contract, this equally complex but absolutely essential project will be completed,” he added.

Livanios stated that, with funding from the Interreg program, construction of the new border station at Lemos, in Prespes, is beginning, with the Ministry of the Interior financing the connection that passes through a particularly environmentally sensitive area. At a later stage, the border stations on the Greece-Albania border will also be upgraded.
