Greece takes action to protect coral reefs in Fourni islands

Greece has adopted a protection framework for coral colonies in the island complex of Fourni in the North Aegean Sea. According to a statement by the Ministry of Environment and Energy, a Ministerial Decision was signed, prohibiting fishing with towed gear in the entire protected area, which causes irreversible damage to these vulnerable marine ecosystems.
With the assistance of the Ionian University, the Municipality of Fourni, scientific bodies, non-governmental organisations and the island's fishermen, more than 300 species have been recorded and the effort continues.

Environment and Energy Minister Stavros Papastavrou said that protecting Greece's marine biodiversity, which is an integral part of its wealth, is a priority. "Today, World Oceans Day, the Ministry of Environment and Energy announces another initiative, the protection of the corals of the Fourni, towards the practical implementation of our commitment to a sustainable marine ecosystem. The Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, and the Ministry of Environment and Energy are participating in the 3rd United Nations Conference on Oceans (UNOC-3), where Greece is leading international developments for the protection of oceans and marine ecosystems. We protect our seas and the precious life they host, we respect the present and care for the future," he stressed.
