Independent Fiscal Council reviews financial programs of parties

The Fiscal Council will evaluate the financial programs of political parties and party coalitions, assessing and quantifying the anticipated fiscal impact of the proposals included within them.

At the same time, the Ministry of Economy and Finance may be held accountable to the Fiscal Council, as it will, in certain cases, be obliged to implement corrective measures. Additionally, the Council will have access to data held by the Independent Authority for Public Revenue, the Electronic National Social Security Entity, and other information systems particularly the ERGANI Information System, and other public bodies maintaining tax records.

These represent the enhanced authorities granted to the Fiscal Council, which, according to the bill from the Ministry of National Economy and Finance submitted for consultation last Thursday, will now operate as an Independent Authority. The Council will be headed by a chairman and a board of directors and will enjoy functional independence, along with administrative and financial autonomy. It will not be subject to control or supervision by government bodies, state agencies, or other administrative authorities, but will instead be accountable solely to parliamentary scrutiny.
