Pierrakakis at Sciences Po: Greece will continue its reform policy

The upgrade of state digital services not only dispels any distrust of the state, but also releases growth potential and brings the state closer to the citizen, National Economy and Finance Minister Kyriakos Pierrakakis emphasised during his speech at the Paris Institute of Political Sciences (Sciences Po). Addressing the event held on Monday, he said that digitalisation "must be our compass for restoring citizens' trust in the state."

Speaking on the sidelines of the OECD Ministerial Conference, Pierrakakis outlined his vision for shaping the future through bold reform policies, emphasising that Greece has left behind the period of crises and has entered an era of reforms and growth. The minister also underlined the importance of the digital transition, highlighting the creation of gov.gr, the introduction of electronic prescriptions and the digitalisation of over 1,500 services as models for modernisation.

He also shared his experiences from his time as digital governance minister, analysing the strategies he followed to address critical challenges in the areas of education, digital innovation and international technological competitiveness. Referring to the Greek economy, Pierrakakis underlined Greece's significant progress in fiscal stability, noting that the country maintains a primary surplus that exceeds European targets and is reducing debt as a percentage of GDP.

He also pointed out that Greece is recording steady economic growth and attracting investments, showcasing that reforms and the green and digital transitions are strong drivers of growth. He also emphasised the significant de-escalation of public debt, saying that if this trend continues, Greece will not be the country with the largest public debt in the eurozone in 2029. In addition, he highlighted the significant reduction in tax evasion and the informal economy, which fell from 35%-40% of GDP to 15%, a fact which, he said, is mainly attributed to the digital transformation of the economy.
