University security at the focus of the meeting between PM and rectors on Tuesday

Over 470 arrests have been carried out and dozens of occupied university buildings ended in the last six years, in the framework of police operations to restore legality in state universities, according to information provided.

Since 2019, a total of 26 'hold-outs' or 'self-managed' areas in universities have been cleared in Attica Region alone. A total of 10 spaces were turned over to rectors in 2024 alone. In Thessaloniki, a total of 11 occupations have ended, including the so-called "Biology Dept Hangout" which was occupied for over three decades, and which is now housing the unified library of Aristotle University of Thesaloniki's School of Science.

As government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis has announced, there are no active sit-ins or occupations at this time.

Police actions have led to 188 prosecutions, while the Citizen Protection Minsitry has established specific protocols and units to fight any racist or extremist violence.

As government sources note, the establishment of security in universities is a clear goal of this government. It is in this context that Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotaks is meeting with rectors of all state universities on Tuesday.

Among new measures expected to be introduced are disciplinary action against students attacking members of the academic community or damaging premises, establishing a single disciplinary council, suspending student privileges for two years if a student is charged with violence or serious damage (with a permanent suspension if found guilty), and automated security systems allowing entry with a student ID, while students who damage property will be called to assume the cost of restoration.
