Holy Monastery of Sinai ‘under threat,’ says Archbishop Ieronymos
Archbishop of Athens and All Greece Ieronymos strongly condemned the recent court decision in Egypt concerning the Holy Monastery of Saint Catherine on Mount Sinai, describing it as a "dissolution of any concept of law" and a case of outright confiscation of the Monastery’s property.
“ Following yesterday’s scandalous decision-an act of violent violation of human and especially religious freedoms-issued by Egypt’s judicial authorities, the oldest Orthodox Christian monument in the world, the Holy Monastery of Saint Catherine, is now entering a grave trial reminiscent of darker times,” Archbishop Ieronymos said and stressed that: “ Essentially, the Egyptian government itself has chosen-despite recent commitments to the contrary made by the Egyptian President to the Greek Prime Minister-to abolish any sense of justice and effectively attempt to erase the very existence of the Monastery, undermining its entire operation, its devotional and spiritual mission, and its cultural contribution.”
