HEDNO signs purchase agreement for 2,760,000 'smart' electricity meters

The Hellenic Electricity Distribution Network Operator (HEDNO) signed a contract for the purchase of 2,760,000 new-generation 'smart' meters and a new central Meter Data Management (MDM) system, it said on Wednesday.
Providers include associations of companies Iskraemeco d.d. & Oracle France SAS, Itron Spain SLU - ZIV Aplicaciones y Tecnologia SL, and Protasis SA - Sagemcom Energy & Telecom SAS.
HEDNO's plan is to replace all electricity meters in Greece by 2030. Company CEO Anastasios Manos commented, "It is the most important project to date to upgrade the Greek electricity market. To start with, I would like to thank our shareholders - the Public Power Corporation and Macquarie Asset Management - for their confidence in and strong support of our investment program and the strategy of our growth and transformation, a basic component of which is converting the power distribution network into a smart and customer-based network." He added that smart meters are a necessity, rather than a choice, for a sustainable and digitally advanced energy future.
Besides the 2,760,000 meters foreseen in the eight-year purchase agreements signed on Wednesday, HEDNO has already received another 600,000 new generation 'smart' meters.
The first 100,000 meters of the new contracts are expected to be delivered in 2025, and the last ones in 2027, while the new MDM smart system is expected to be fully operational in a year from now (end of May 2026).
The HEDNO statement also said that up to 1,100,000 smart meters have already been installed so far, the priority being big customers, "with the result that over 55% of Greece's energy is now being measured remotely."
