Greece catching up with European Commission recommendations, having fulfilled 2 of 6

Greece has improved its standing in terms of rule of law after fulfilling two of six recommendations by the European Commission.

In Brussels on Tuesday, State Deputy Akis Skertsos and Deputy Minister to the Prime Minister and government spokesman Pavlos Marinakis presented European Commissioner Michael McGrath (responsible for democracy, justice, the rule of law and consumer protection) with data that includes the participation of judges in the appointment of leading judges for the three highest courts of Greece (a Commission request in 2022 and 2023), and the effective and systematic confirmation of accuracy of asset statements (requested in 2022).

The two ministers also presented 14 initiatives that will fulfil the remaining four recommendations relating to four pivotal issues: accelerating court decisions, and managing corruption, freedom of the press and the introduction of checks and balances to improve operation of institutions. In addition, the incorporation of the Anti-SLAPP Directive is in process.

In addition, the ministers said that no bill was tabled in Parliament in 2024 without first being posted for public consultation.
