Zacharaki at EU Education Council: Education must foster skills development

Minister of Education Sofia Zacharaki, speaking at the EU Education, Youth, Culture and Sports Council in Brussels on Monday and Tuesday, addressed the integration of technology and AI in education, as well as the international engagement of Greek universities.
"The Greek government believes and invests significant resources in upgrading public education in order to make it resilient and adaptable to challenges and risks. We use modern pedagogical methods, we strengthen our digital infrastructure through the digital school, and we provide targeted training to our teachers," Zacharaki said.
She also underlined that Greece welcomes the initiative of the European Commission for the establishment of the “ Union of Skills”. At the same time, she stressed that Greece supports students psychosocially by doubling the number of psychologists and social workers in schools.
"Since 2019, the decision to limit the use of mobile phones in schools by students is already being implemented. From September 2024, the use of mobile phones will not be allowed in all Greek schools, with strict exceptions related to health and safety issues of students," she said.
