Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Minister Yiannis Kefalogiannis visited on Sunday the island of Santorini where he conducted an on-site inspection of areas in the caldera and presided over a meeting with the participation of local authorities and the relevant scientific and operational bodies.
During the meeting, the scientific data were presented, and the forecasts of the new Joint Ministerial Decision (JMD) were discussed, which is expected to be published in the coming days and incorporates the unanimous recommendations of the relevant committees of scientists.
"I am today in Santorini, where I conducted an on-site inspection at Ormos, Armeni, Ammoudi, and Korfos of Thirasia, which remain closed to this day due to the Joint Ministerial Decision issued about two months ago. In the meeting with the municipal authorities, the prefect, and all the island's agencies, we discussed the next steps in view of the tourist season. We are proceeding based on the scientific data and the recommendations of the relevant committees, ensuring both the safety of citizens and visitors, as well as economic activity in anticipation of the tourist season. The new JMD marks a balanced and safe transition to the next phase," said the Minister for Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, Yiannis Kefalogiannis.
As part of the visit, the Minister went for an on-site inspection of areas of increased interest, such as Ammoudi and Thirasia, where he was briefed on the situation and the progress of the restoration works."
