Tassoulas meets leaders of parliamentary parties, representatives of organisations and committees in Cyprus

Concluding his visit to Cyprus, President of the Hellenic Republic Constantine Tassoulas on Friday met with the President of the Cypriot House of Representatives, Annita Demetriou, the Secretary General of the Progressive Party of the Working People (AKEL), Stefanos Stefanou, the President of the Democratic Party (DIKO) party, Nikolas Papadopoulos, the Deputy President Social Democrats Party EDEK, Maria Vassiliadou, the President of the Democratic Alignment (DIPA), Marios Garoyian, and the President of the Cyprus Greens Party, Stavros Papadouris.
In his statements, shortly before his departure from Cyprus, Tassoulas emphasised that "my first official visit to Cyprus was completed today. It was with great emotion and honour that I was here for a busy three days. I met with the leadership of the Cypriot people, with the President of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, with the President of the House of Representatives of Cyprus, Annita Demetriou. I had the opportunity and the honour to speak at the House of Representatives of Cyprus. I met with representatives of all parties, with committees on missing persons, refugees, occupied territories. And I wanted with my presence here - which is not ceremonial, it is symbolic and substantial - to underline that Greece is always inextricably linked to the goals of the Cypriot government, it is a supporter of the struggle of Cyprus in the effort to avoid and refuse faites accomplis."
He also said: "It is now 65 years after the independence of Cyprus and 51 years after the illegal Turkish invasion and military occupation of approximately 40% of the territory of Cyprus. And we are fighting for a reunification of Cyprus based on the European acquis, which provides for a state in the European Union for all the inhabitants of Cyprus, which will have one international personality, one citizenship, one sovereignty."
Tassoulas added that "all this effort, which has recently been revived after seven years of inactivity, gives us optimism. But what gives us greater optimism is the fact that Greece and Cyprus, as I said at the beginning, united and believing in the final vindication, continue this struggle. Cyprus, the Cypriot people, are entitled to hope that this struggle is not in vain. In the end, it will be vindicated."
