Androulakis criticises the government for its response to Erdogan's statements

Main opposition PASOK-Movement for Change leader Nikos Androulakis criticised the government's low-key response to the actions of Turkiye's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in the occupied territories in Cyprus, as well as calling its policy on housing ineffective, in an interview with Mega TV on Thursday.

"We propose a comprehensive housing policy that has been implemented in other states of the South - by utilising the Recovery Fund - but the government's response is to provide a subsidy. Does the subsidy 'cure' the problem? No, it is a painkiller that does not solve the problem," he said, referring to the problems of everyday life in the face of "ineffective government policies" and emphasising the housing problem.

Androulakis also highlighted the fact that Defence Minister Nikos Dendias, while representing the government during Wednesday's parliamentary debate, had chosen not to comment on the main opposition's criticism of the foreign ministry's handling of relations with Turkiye.

"We have different approaches within ruling New Democracy party to the management of national issues. [Former premier Antonis] Samaras, Mr. Dendias, [Prime Minister Kyriakos] Mitsotakis, [Foreign Minister George] Gerapetritis and [MP Dora] Bakoyannis express different opinions. Erdogan went to the Occupied Territories, clearly raised the issue of partitioning the island and instead of the government officially responding, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs chose to reply with a 'leak'," Androulakis pointed out.

"Therefore, it is the Greek government that is downplaying the issue, not our partners", he added. "Also, I constantly ask what the timetable is for laying the cable for the Israel-Cyprus-Greece electrical interconnection, a project of 650 million euros that have been bound by the European Union. The prime minister presented a document in Parliament showing that the investment is continuing, when I first raised the issue, but did not announce any timetable," he stressed.
