Hatzidakis: Four interventions to address lawlessness in universities
The government is absolutely determined to deal with delinquency on university premises, without delay and in a spirit of common sense, Deputy Prime Minister Kostis Hatzidakis indicated in an interview with public broadcaster ERT1 on Thursday.
More specifically, Hatzidakis announced specific government initiatives in four areas:
First, use of all technological tools in order to enhance control and protect the rights of members of the university community and human life, while respecting personal privacy.
Second, holding those who participate or lead such incidents responsible for their actions. In the case of students, this "should lead to penalties that include expulsion from the university. You cannot be a student and hit your fellow students or participate in such actions. There must be a limit."
Third, consequences for the rectoral authorities that do not comply with the provisions of the law. "Laws must be implemented. No one is obliged to be elected rector. But from the moment they are elected, they must know that the university is not an independent state, nor are there any statelets in Greece where each person can do whatever they wish," he said.
Fourth, consequences in terms of civil law. "Anyone who damages public property must pay compensation. A document will come from the Independent Authority for Public Revenues (AADE) that will specify what they must pay."
