Marinakis: We will propose changes to the Article 86 of the Constitution

Deputy Minister to the Prime Minister and government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis in an interview with SKAI radio on Wednesday referring to the elections in Canada stated ""It is a result, like any electoral process, it is a result of the verdict of the citizens of each country and it is a principle, I think, of every democratic state to respect those who are voted for by the citizens of each state through the electoral process and our government to cooperate and consult with those elected leaders. That's how democracies work."
"Specifically regarding Contract 717 and its connection to the Tempi tragedy, it was emphasized that there is 'another ongoing open case file under investigation. It concerns an offense, with the legal characterization to be determined by the judiciary, of an economic nature. That is, it is being examined whether the contract was implemented lawfully, within the correct timeframes, and whether each extension or any action taken was correct or erroneous. I will simply say, without acting as an investigator-this is an objective point-that some answers have been provided to the judiciary, including approvals given by the Court of Audit and all related matters.
And there is something else. If one listens to the discussion, certain individuals are being accused of both things and their opposites. That is, they are being accused for extending a contract-for granting an extension, specifically referring to the last extension during the New Democracy administration-which, if it had not been granted, the project referred to as 717 would never have been completed. Note: What should or should not have been done, from a criminal standpoint, is not for us to decide. We are merely stating some objective facts. Therefore, investigating a contract with financial implications and any potential criminal liabilities-which PASOK built an indictment upon, not the judiciary; PASOK extended it and took it further-is one matter. And what we are saying is another matter: that the tragic accident in Tempi, in Larissa, is being investigated, including the causes that led to it, and there is a corresponding criminal characterization. This is to help the public understand what the opposition is constantly trying to do to create impressions."
Regarding ministerial responsibility, the government spokesperson clarified: "I do not believe that there should be 'two-speed' citizens. As a political party and as a governing majority, we demonstrated this through our adherence to the full legal process in the case of Christos Triantopoulos. What has been discussed in recent days as the 'Triantopoulos model' essentially signifies that a former minister or deputy minister, if there is something that needs investigation, should not be treated differently from any other citizen. That is, they should be subject to the natural judge who will determine whether they should be tried, not tried, or tried for a specific offense, etc. Simply put, in the case of a politician, if the judicial council determines that there is something further, the Parliament must grant approval again. This is why we have announced, and the Prime Minister stated in Parliament, that in the context of the constitutional revision, we will propose changes to the Article 86."
Regarding the polls, the government spokesperson emphasized: "Those in the opposition who spoke of a delegitimized government and a delegitimized prime minister are themselves, based on the polls at least, proving to be a delegitimized opposition. They continue the tradition that began in 2019, initiated by Alexis Tsipras and continued by Sokratis Famellos and Nikos Androulakis, wherein, while in opposition, they portray a country in disarray, yet they themselves keep declining as the opposition. They should reflect on this if they wish; it's their own concern. The government has two years ahead. It holds an unprecedented advantage for a second-term government, and the prime minister personally enjoys a similar advantage for a second-term leader. If we aim to regain the trust of our only judges-the Greek citizens-we must complete all the initiatives we've discussed today and on previous occasions, just as we've successfully completed others. We have two years ahead to accomplish even more, and at that point, we'll enter the phase of evaluation, which is the pre-election period, culminating in the electoral process. It's as straightforward as that."
