Foreign Ministry: Greece assumes presidency of the UNSC on 1 May 2025

On 1 May 2025, Greece assumes the presidency of the United Nations Security Council. According to the United Nations Charter, the Security Council is the body with primary responsibility for the maintenance of international peace and security.
"During its month-long presidency, Greece will have the opportunity to showcase its strong diplomatic footprint, its role as an honest interlocutor and bridge between East and West, North and South, with international law and the UN Charter as the main guides of its foreign policy," the Foreign Ministry said in an announcement.
As it noted, "maritime security, one of the six priorities of Greece's two-year term on the Security Council, will be the subject of the High-Level Event, which will take place on May 20 in New York."
Themes of the Greek Presidency will also include the protection of civilians in wartime, "Women, Peace and Security" and "Children in Armed Conflict".
It is also noted that "the war in Ukraine and the crisis in the Middle East will be a central theme of the Security Council meetings. Developments in the Western Balkans, the situation in Libya and Sudan have also been selected as main topics of discussion".
"During its Presidency, Greece, as a strong supporter of multilateral diplomacy, collective security and the peacekeeping role of the United Nations, has been a strong supporter of the United Nations' role in the region.
