ECONOMIST IMPACT-Dimas underlines Greece's significant progress

"The message is clear: forget the Greece of the economic crisis that belongs to the past. Greece is not only converging rapidly towards Europe, but is making significant steps in the modernisation and restructuring of the public sector and the economy," Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Christos Dimas said at the Economist conference "Greece Transportation and Infrastructure Summit - Priorities for connectivity in Europe" on Wednesday.
In particular, the minister referred to the significant progress Greece has made in the last six years:
"A few years ago, the Greek 10-year bond was rated as junk. Today, our bond yield is stable and lower than many European countries or even the US.
A few years ago, Greece's growth rate was among the lowest in the EU. Over the last six years, Greece has consistently been among the EU countries with the highest growth rates and our forecasts for the coming years are similar.
A few years ago, the unemployment rate in Greece was by far the highest in the EU. In the last six years, Greece has seen a record reduction in the unemployment rate, having created more than 500,000 jobs.
A few years ago, the minimum wage in Greece was at 650 euros; today it is at 880 euros, ranking the country in the middle of the 22 countries with a minimum wage.
We have record levels of investment, exports, reduction of public debt, increase in deposits, increase in Research and Development spending..." .
In this context, Dimas said that the political leadership of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport has launched an effort to "strengthen transport connectivity and infrastructure resilience, with the ultimate aim of contributing to the exploitation of Greece's regional, geopolitical and economic role".
He referred to the government's priorities and policies for infrastructure and transport, noting that the implementation of major projects in railways, road networks, airports, ports, irrigation and transport will improve the quality of life of all citizens.
