Fire breaks out in outdoor garbage dump at Votanikos; 112 message to stay indoors

 A fire that broke out in garbage dumped at an outdoor space at the Votanikos area of Athens on Wednesday evening led to an emergency message 112 to residents of the greater Athens area to stay indoors because of smoke inhalation.

The fire broke out at 19:45 at an open space on Aghiou Polykarpou street.

The 112 message read as follows: "Fire burning at a land parcel in the Votanikos area. Smoke is heading to your area. Remain inside, shut doors and windows. Follow the directions of authorities."

A total of 15 firefighters with 5 fire trucks were at hand to put the fire out with the additional assistance of water trucks and heavy machinery from the local government.
