Fuel and power prices on a downward trend

The average price of unleaded petrol, according to the latest price surveys by the Ministry of Development (April 11), stands at 1.755 euros per liter, compared to 1.794 euros at the beginning of the year and 1.962 euros in April 2024. Similarly, diesel is priced at 1.522 euros per liter, down from 1.578 euros in January and 1.715 euros in the same month last year.
The drop in prices is attributed to international turbulence caused by the imposition of tariffs by the US, as well as concerns about a potential slowdown in the global economy, which in turn affects fuel demand.
Indicatively, the refinery price for unleaded petrol dropped by 8 cents per liter within a week, reaching 53 cents on April 11 compared to 61 cents on April 4.
The strengthening of the euro against the dollar has also been favorable for consumers, as international crude oil and commodity prices are denominated in dollars.
As for electricity, which now powers not only household appliances but also electric vehicles, the average retail price fell in April to 13.8 cents per kilowatt-hour, from 17.4 cents in January (excluding the state subsidy). In April 2024, the corresponding price was 0.11 cents.
This period is conducive to falling prices due to excess production from renewable sources and subdued demand. Price developments in the first half of April suggest that, if the trend continues, a further deceleration in prices may be observed in May.
