First compensation awarded for victim of Tempi train accident

An Athens court awarded 800,000 euros to the wife, kids and sister of the inspector who lost his life in the Tempi train accident, in the first ruling since the deadly accident almost two years ago.
The court recognized the joint and full liability of both Greek railway operator OSE and private route operator Hellenic Train who although they were aware that the remote control and signaling systems were not operating, they allowed the former to carry out transport and the latter to transport passengers, "exposing both the passengers and the employees to danger."
Τhe judges found that they "failed to provide the critical safety and control systems for railway traffic, the operation and use of which would have certainly prevented the occurrence of the accident."
According to the ruling, "it was proven that the accident was due to a fault, namely gross negligence, on the part of OSE and Hellenic Train."
