Coast guard officer slightly injured; traffickers arrested in migrants boat incident

A Coast Guard officer suffered a minor head injury and was taken to Mytilini Hospital where he was given first aid when a speedboat carrying 30 migrants and refugees at the coast of Agrilia, south of the city of Mytilini, rammed a coast guard vessle in his attempt to escape.
The Coast Guard vessel, which was on a scheduled patrol, spotted a speedboat disembarking migrants and refugees.  The Coast Guard vessel attempted to stop the speedboat, which tried to return to Turkiye, using light and sound signals. A pursuit followed and the speedboat performed dangerous manoeuvers and attempted to ram the Greek vessel. During this process, the speedboat hit the Coast Guard boat side-on, as a result of which a member of the service was injured. The two Turkish drivers of the speedboat aged 31 and 25 were arrested and the injured officer was taken to Mytilini hospital.
A total of 30 people from Yemen, Palestine, Afghanistan and Iraq were located and identified by officers of the Greek Police who were transferred to the Reception and Identification Center of Kara Tepe.
The port authorities of Mytilene have launched an investigation and the arrested traffickers were sent to Mytilene prosecutor.
