Labour Min Kerameus: Transparent, οbjective system for minimum wage set to begin in 2028

The new mechanism for determining the minimum wage from 2028 was presented on Thursday by Labour and Social Security Minister Niki Kerameus in a press conference.

Kerameus emphasized that “ the government’s primary priority is to strengthen workers’ income and increase their purchasing power by linking wage levels to inflation and the country's economic growth."

“ Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has committed to raising the minimum wage to 950 euros by 2027 amounting to a total increase of 46.2% since 2019, along with a 6 percentage point reduction in social security contributions by 2027. In line with this goal and integrating the European Directive 2022/2041, we are proposing a calculation method based on transparent and objective criteria to benefit and protect workers,” she said.

From 2028, the minimum wage is proposed to be set using a mathematical formula that will consider inflation and productivity growth in the economy, using objective indicators developed by the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT).

The new minimum wage determination system includes four key innovations aimed at enhancing transparency, objectivity and worker protection.

During the press conference, Kerameus also highlighted that the increase in the minimum wage is coupled with reduced costs for businesses, achieved through the reduction in social security contributions.
