German Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier visiting Greece to October 31

Federal President of Germany Frank-Walter Steinmeier is visiting Greece on October 29-31, at the invitation of President of the Hellenic Republic Katerina Sakellaropoulou. During his visit, the German president will visit Thessaloniki, Athens and Crete.
According to a German presidency announcement, "The diversity and intensity of German-Greek relations are reflected by the focuses of the visit - from historical remembrance to political challenges such as migration and sustainability to cooperation in business, science and culture."
On 29 October, the same announcement said, the German president visited the site of the future Holocaust Museum of Greece in Thessaloniki, accompanied by Greek President Katerina Sakellaropoulou. Thereafter, a discussion about the current state of German-Greek relations was scheduled to take place at the Goethe-Institut, with the participation of the former coach of Greece's national soccer team, Otto Rehagel.
In the afternoon, Steinmeier was scheduled to travel to Athens and tour the Boehringer Ingelheim production site there. A visit to the studio of artist Teo Triantafyllidis and a discussion with artists from the Athens Biennale were due to take place in the evening.
On October 30, the German president is to begin the day by laying a wreath at the Monument of the Unknown Soldier, after which he will be received with military honours at the presidential mansion, for a meeting with President Sakellaropoulou. This will be followed by a meeting with Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis at the Maximos Mansion.
A visit to the Numismatic Museum, which is housed in the 'Iliou Melathron' originally designed by architect Ernst Ziller as the family residence of Heinrich Schliemann, will follow, after which Steinmeier will attend an event celebrating the 150th anniversary of the German Archaeological Institute in Athens and give a speech there.
In the afternoon, he will pay a visit to a registration and reception centre for refugees in Malakasa. A cello concert will take place in the evening, in addition to a dinner hosted by the Greek President.
On October 31, Frank-Walter Steinmeier will be the first Federal President to travel to Crete, where he will visit the town of Kandanos, which was completely destroyed by the Wehrmacht as a reprisal on 3 June 1941 during the early days of the German occupation of the island of Crete. A wreath-laying ceremony, speeches and meetings with eyewitnesses are planned for the memorial event.
The visit will conclude with a visit to Terra Creta, a 'farm to fork' regenerative agriculture project run by the German tourist group TUI.
