Transport Min Staikouras visits FlyOver project site in Thessaloniki

Infrastructure and Transport Minister Christos Staikouras paid a visit to the main project site for the FlyOver in Thessaloniki and was briefed on progress on Tuesday.

According to a ministry statement, representatives of the consortium (AVAX-METKA SA) that has assumed construction on behalf of the private partnership entity 'Kedrinos Lofos' asserted that the upgrades of the interior ringroad of Thessaloniki are being carried out at normal rates on several fronts. Earth works are fully developing, as are technical and hydraulic works.

The main object is the construction of the FlyOver highway, covering 7.6 km. Part of it consists of a bridge 22 m wide and 4 km long, which will be the longest bridge ever constructed in Greece. The construction of the bridge's foundation is in progress.

As Staikouras noted, "The FlyOver is a needed work for Thessaloniki, which will reduce the environmental footprint and improve road safety. Following its completion, the new ring road will be able to serve 10,000 vehicles per hour, compared to the 5,000 vehicles passing by today. The implementation works are moving at a satisfactory pace. Right now, nearly 300 people and 70 heavy machinery are involved in the project. The political leadership of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport is in constant contact with related agencies and the company, in order to ensure the timetables are followed and any problems that may arise are resolved."
