FM Gerapetritis: Greece will not actively engage in the Middle East war

Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis emphasized in an interview on Monday with Action 24 tv station that Greece is making every effort to halt hostilities in the Middle East. He reaffirmed that Greece will honor its international commitments but will not become involved in the conflict.

Reflecting on the one-year anniversary of the Hamas terrorist attack, Gerapetritis called it "a truly dark moment in history," noting that it set back efforts for security, peace, and the establishment of a Palestinian state. He described the current situation as grim, as both sides are caught in a cycle of conflict.

He stressed Greece’s recognition of Israel's right to self-defense within the boundaries of international and humanitarian law, reaffirming Greece’s stance on Israel’s security as a strategic partner. At the same time, he acknowledged Greece's strong historical ties with the Arab world, emphasizing that these relationships have enabled Greece to maintain dialogue with all sides.

Gerapetritis also confirmed that Greece has a comprehensive plan for evacuating Greek citizens and allies if necessary, while warning that the consequences of broader escalation in the region would be disastrous.

On migration, he mentioned the recent adoption of the EU's New Pact on Migration and Asylum, acknowledging its shortcomings but considering it a significant step toward fair burden-sharing across the Union.

When asked about the Greek-Turkish dialogue and his upcoming meeting with the Turkish FM Hakan Fidan in Athens, Gerapetritis underlined the importance of discussion over perpetual tension. He made it clear that Greece has not retreated from any of its claims and will never negotiate on sovereignty issues, such as territorial waters.
