SYRIZA to hold elections for a new leader and central committee on November 24

Elections to select the new party president and central committee of main opposition SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance will be held on November 24, with a follow-up round on December 1, if necessary, while an emergency party congress will be held on November 1-3. This was the proposal put forward by the party's Political Secretariat and approved by a majority of 112 votes by the SYRIZA-PA Central Commitee meeting that convened on Saturday.
A proposal put forward by Theodora Tzakri, representing those supporting ousted former leader Stefanos Kasselakis, for an election on November 3 and November 9 and an emergency congress on October 5-6 received 62 votes and that by Pavlos Polakis, who proposed elections on November 3 and November 10, received 9.
The meeting also voted in favour of a proposal that each of the candidates for president must also submit a source of wealth statement, by 87 votes for and 84 against, a move viewed Kasselakis supporters as an attempt to bar Kasselakis from standing.
