Reinforcements sent to Patra fire as more areas evacuated

Residents in Eglykada were on Tuesday sent a message to evacuate toward the city of Patra due to a wildfire heading their way from the Girokomio district in their area, from the 112 emergency number. Similar evacuation messages were earlier sent to the areas of Girokomio, Aroi and Pagona, due to a wildfire that started in Girokomio. Those in Girokomio had been instructed to head toward Eglykada and the KETX army camp, while those in Aroi and Pagona were told to head toward Patra.
Earlier, authorities evacuated the Karamandanio children's hospital, taking the patients to the Agios Andreas general state hospital, as well as the Konstantopoulio retirement home and the "Merimna" therapeutic education centre located in the same area.
Strong reinforcements were sent to help get the fire in the Girokomio area under control, with a total of 80 firefighters with 25 vehicles and three teams on foot now battling the blaze, assisted by 10 firefighting aircraft dropping water from above.
