Kos, Chios, Geraki fires out; high risk of fire on Wednesday

Firefighters remained on alert at the islands of Kos and Chios to ensure fires are not rekindled, the Fire Brigade said late on Tuesday.

The fire that broke out at Geraki in the Kastelli region of Iraklio, Crete, was also put out.

Overall, 36 fires broke out in the last 24 hours in Greece, the Fire Brigade said. Of those, 33 were put out early.

Local investigation offices of the Fire Brigade are investigating the causes of the fires, while the Fire Brigade called on all citizens to be particularly vigilant and, in case of fire, follow closely the authorities' directions.

Meanwhile, the Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Ministry noted that there is a very high risk of fire in the regions of Chania (Crete), Laconia (Peloponnese), and Kythira island on Wednesday. The risk is grade 4, one grade lower than the maximum 5.
