General alert for firefighters in Attica due to very high fire risk; partial alert in rest of Greece

The fires that broke out in Attica and Argolida are now fully under control with no actively burning fronts, the fire brigade announced on Thursday. Strong firefighting and civil protection forces worked through the night to contain the two fires, one near the Vari-Koropi Avenue in Attica and the second in Iliokastro, Argolida, and to stop them reigniting. A force of 105 firefighters, with three teams on foot and 27 vehicles, remained at the scene of the Koropi fire, while another 85 firefighters, with three teams on foot and 19 vehicles were operating in Iliokastro.

In the meantime, two more fires broke out in Attica early on Thursday, one in Neoktista, Aspropyrgos and the second in the Schisto area in Korydallos. The fire in Aspropyrgos started at 5:10 on Thursday morning, in low vegetation, and was partially under control, the fire brigade said. A force of 38 firefighters, with two teams on foot and 10 vehicles, assisted by a helicopter, were working to put it out. The fire in Schisto started shortly after 8:00 in a hard-to-access location and was also reported to have no actively burning front, with 30 firefighters with two teams on foot, seven vehicles and two helicopters used in the firefighting effort, assisted by local authority water tankers.

There was a Level 4 Fire Risk Forecast (Very high) in Attica and the regional units of Evia, Viotia, Lesvos, Chios, Corinth, Argolida and Lakonia on Thursday, according to Fire Risk Assessment Map issued by the General Secretariat for Civil Protection.

Fire department personnel in the Attica region were placed on general alert, while there was a partial alert for fire fighting forces in the rest of the country, in order to deal with the greater demands created by the large number of fires and the very high fire risk.

Varybobi

A wildfire burning grasses and low-growing vegetation in the Attica suburb of Varybobi is under full control, the Fire Brigade said on Thursday afternoon.
A force of 45 firefighters, with 3 teams on foot, 11 vehicles, 3 aircraft and 3 helicopters was deployed to put out the flames, with support from local authority water tankers.
The police reopened Tatoiou Road after the taverna 'Leonidas' after shutting it down as a safety precaution.

 

Traffic was also restored on Thursday afternon on a section of Ionias Ave in Menidi.
