The European election results mark the birth of a rallying point for Greece's patriotic governance, Elliniki Lysi (Greek Solution) party leader Kyriakos Velopoulos said on Sunday night.

With nearly 85% of all votes counted and a record low turnout of voters, the far-right party passed marginally but securely the Communist Party of Greece (KKE) to become the fourth party the European Parliament elections.

"For the first time in Greece, a party broke away and created a great upset," Velopoulos said when the preliminary results came out. "Despite the assault we experienced, the Greek people put their faith in us. We call on all Greek patriots to join forces with Elliniki Lysi so there may be a true patriotic governance in Greece."

After thanking voters, he added, "We wholeheartedly hope that at some point mass media realize that Elliniki Lysi is a purely national, social, popular party which has come to rule saying the following: it is a force of responsibility."

Velopoulos said that his party "is officially the opposition in Greece, and we will continue until we rule Greece." He asserted that "patriots stand with us and we will never disappoint them."
