Israeli Ambassador to Greece Noam Katz reacts to Kasselakis' visit to Palestinian Authority

The visit to the Palestinian Authority by SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance "could be called a missed opportunity," Israel's Ambassador to Greece Noam Katz said on Monday.

Responding to press questions following the Greek party leader's visit, the ambassador said, "One could say it was a missed opportunity for the president of the main opposition to make a difference instead of making statements." He added, "If you want to contribute, you need to speak with both sides, you need to speak honestly to both sides."

Ambassador Katz said he had hoped that "besides the sympathy to the Palestinians, the SYRIZA leader, while in Ramallah, would have condemned the atrocities of Hamas, would have demanded the immediate and unconditional release of hostages. That Mr. Kasselakis, when crossing into Israel, would have taken the opportunity to also meet with the families of the 125 hostages in Israel and visit the kibbutz in the south, where Hamas carried out its slaughter."

He added that SYRIZA's leader would be welcome in Israel, "but that may not have been his purpose." He expressed his pleasure that the visit went well, especially after there were certain comments that Kasselakis would not be able to enter Israel or the Palestinian Authority because of past statements. "That was entirely unfounded," the ambassador noted.
