Severe weather front brings highest rainfall to Skopelos, Karditsa in central Greece

Thessaly in central Greece and the Sporades Islands off Evia were the regions affected by the heaviest rainfall and thunderstorms from midday Friday to Saturday morning, the meteo.gr/National Observatory of Athens said.
Glossa on Skopelos island recorded the highest rainfall with 119 mm, followed by Karditsa in Thessaly with 117 mm.

According to the weater services, the phenomena will gradually be limited to the northeastern mainland and the eastern parts of the Aegean Sea before subsiding.

Fire Brigade and Civil Protection officials said they had not recorded particular problems, nor received calls for flooded homes or for rescues of trapped people, but had to cut trees down in some regions.

On Saturday, the National Meteorological Service had forecast heavy rainfall, reaching dangerous levels, at the following regions: Thessaly (particularly the eastern part), Sporades Islands, southern Pieria (Macedonia), northern Evia island, Fthiothida prefecture in Central Greece (particulary the north), and the East Aegean islands (mainly Chios and Lesvos).

No flooding or major landslides were recorded in Volos and in Magnisia prefecture and the eastern and southern parts of Mt. Pilion villages, while Fire Brigade forces in Volos and Thessaly did not register great issues. Volos had mostly regular rain except briefly around 05:00, when there was heavy rainfall.

Kikilias in Larissa

Civil Protection Minister Vassilis Kikilias toured Larissa, in the Thessaly Region, to calm fears of residents after their recent experiences of the storms. "There was a justified concern of fellow-citizens here in Thessaly because memories of a destruction and a difficulty are still fresh. We were all coordinated and organized here. I am happy the effort paid off." He noted that the change in climate in Greece brings "circumstances we have to adapt to now."

Regional Governor of Thessaly Dimitris Kouretas said that Magnissia prefecture "did not register problems. But it is now clear that Thessaly, after the Ianos and Daniel/Elias storms, is classified among the highly threatened zones. We ensured rivers and creeks were entirely cleared of swept-in debris and this work was proven in Volos," which was saved from flooding.

He said that within a few hours "Thessaly experienced rainfall equal to what is experienced in 3.5 months," but added that "the system worked satisfactorily, there was no problem, there was coordination."
