Greek budget recorded a primary surplus of 3.692 billion euros in 2023

Greek state budget recorded a primary surplus of 3.692 billion euros in 2023, up from a budget target for a surplus of 851 million and after a primary deficit of 6.652 billion euros in 2022, the Finance ministry said in a report on provisional budget execution on an amended cash basis.

The report said that general government deficit totaled 3.989 billion euros in 2023 from a budget target for a deficit of 8.338 billion and after shortfall of 11.656 billion euros in 2022.

Net budgete revenue was 66.776 billion euros in 2023, up 1.581 billion from targets, reflecting the collection of 1.687 bllion euros from the Recovery and Resilience Fund in December, earlier than intially expected. Tax revenue was 61.671 billion euros, up 1.1% from targets. Tax returns totaled 6.993 billion euros, up 316 million from targets, while Public Investment Programme revenue was 3.323 billion, down 441 million from targets.

Budget spending totaled 70.765 billion euros, down 2.767 billion from targets and down 513 million from 2022. Regular budget spending were down 3.147 billion euros from targets. Public Investment Programme spending was 11.201 billion euros, up 379 million from targets.

In December, budget revenue was 7.612 billion euros, up 1.384 billion from monthly target. Tax revenue was 5.631 billion, up 3.8% from target. Tax returns was 726 million euros, up 182 million from targets. Public Investment Programme revenue was 369 million euros, down 100 million from targets.
