PM Mitsotakis: Further development of shipbuilding industry one of the great challenges of 'the next day'

Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, who on Wednesday visited the "Atlas" shipyard in Perama, one of the 24 shipyards active in the region, underlined the substantial support of the New Democracy government to the country's shipbuilding and repair industry.

Addressing the workers, the prime minister pointed out, among other things, that: "For four years now, our government has effectively supported the country's shipbuilding and repair industry, with interventions that not only saved the emblematic shipyards of Elefsina, restructured the shipyards of Skaramangas, but also supported the 24 shipyards here in Perama, which, as you can see, today respond even more to the demands of their customers. Greece is a country identified with seafaring, the shipyards of Perama have gained a worldwide reputation for the quality of their work. A total of ten thousand people work in the shipbuilding and repair zone of Perama.

The big challenge for the next day is how we can further develop this industry, provide more and better-paying jobs, how we convince more young people to follow this path of technical specialisation. Also how we will cooperate with the technical schools so that you too can have the craftsmen of the next day..."

The Perama shipyards have completed 100 years of continuous activity and provide shipbuilding, repair, design and maintenance services for all sizes and types of small and medium-sized ships at their facilities.

According to government sources, in the last four years, the following jobs were carried out at the Shipyards:

Seventy constructions of new ships and boats with a total tonnage of more than 120,000 gross registered tonnage, as well as lifting-maintenance-repairs in more than 8,500 ships.

In the 24 shipyards of Perama, 520 special companies are active, while work is also provided to 280 special companies supporting their activities. The annual average number of workers employed in the shipyards exceeds 17,000, while 80% of the turnover is foreign exchange inflow from foreign ship-owning companies.
