Freight trains between Athens & Thessaloniki restart on Wednesday night

Two long-distance freight trains will resume operation late on Wednesday evening, announced Hellenic Train.

These are the Athens-Thessaloniki train departing at 22:20, and the Thessaloniki-Thriasio train (West Attica industrial zone) departing at 21:45.

Services in all of Greece were suspended following the deadly train collision at Tempi in central Greece on February 28 that cost the lives of 57 individuals and injured scores more.

The gradual reopening of the railway system was announced by State Minister responsible for Infrastructure & Transport Giorgos Gerapetritis on March 14, following a review of and implementation of safety measures. However, the restart was delayed after a disagreement between Hellenic Train and Hellenic Railways Organization (OSE) on safety issues, which were resolved.
