Hellenic Train and Athens metro staff to strike on Thursday

No Hellenic Train services will be running on Thursday due to a 24-hour strike called by the Panhellenic Federation of Rail Workers (POS), while the SELMA union representing staff on Athens metro lines 2 and 3 (blue and red lines) have also called a strike from 6:00 until midnight on Thursday.
According to the Athens fixed rail networks operator STASY, Athens metro line 1 from Piraeus to Kifissia and the tram services are operating normally.
In an announcement, POS denounced the "long-term neglect of the Greek railways by governments", saying that this had led to the tragic result in Tempi, and noting that the workers' demands for more staff, better training and use of modern safety technology had been routinely ignored.
SELMA, on its part, said that its strike was held to protest similar problems to those faced by the railways, adding that those killed and injured in Tempi were "sacrificed on the altar of private profit and official indifference."
"For years now our union has complained of huge shortages in equipment, spare parts, maintenance consumables and a huge staff shortage in all operating and maintenance roles, which force the existing staff to work punishing hours with all that this entails," its announcement said.
