KKE's Koutsoumbas: 'Household basket' a huge mockery

Communist Party of Greece (KKE) General Secretary Dimitris Koutsoumbas, speaking on Thursday to ANT1 TV, referred to the recently launched "household basket" of lower-priced goods, calling it a "huge mockery".
"In essence, we have the supermarket chains' discount offers placed in the 'basket' and subsequently the profits go to the wholesale traders and companies that promote their products, especially the label products, while supermarkets have the chance to get rid of old stock..." Koutsoumbas said.
The aboliton of VAT for energy and staple goods is a measure that would provide relief for working class households, combined with substantial increases in wages and pensions, he added.
KKE's leader also noted that the conflict in Ukraine may have contributed to the high prices but the problem with high inflation began long before the war.
Finally, Koutsoumbas expressed hope that the nationwide strike on November 9 will be "a major strike and I believe that it will mark a new start for the development of a new dynamic movement in order for people to really become the protagonist of the developments".
