Ministry, HRADF sign go-ahead for construction of new prison in Aspropyrgos

The Citizen Protection Ministry and Hellenic Republic Asset Development Fund (HRADF), the country's privatization agency, signed an agreement on Tuesday for the building of a new prison in Aspropyrgos, NW Attica, replacing that of Korydallos in the greater Piraeus area.
The project go-ahead was signed by Deputy Citizen Protection Minister Lefteris Economou and HRADF Executive Director Panagiotis Stampoulidis and will be fulfilled through a private-public partnership (PPP). The private entity will be selected through an international tender, while HRADF will be responsible for overseeing the execution of the agreement that will be signed between the ministry and the winner of the concession.
The initial budgeting of the new jail is set at 130 million euros without VAT, which is expected to cover the pre-assessed cost of construction. It will not include equipment for the facility, or operation, and maintenance. According to initial plans, the buildings will be constructed on a plot of land measuring nearly 10 hectares (100 stremmas) and will include 14 wings with a 200-holding capacity each. The facilities will also include hospitalization areas, a psychiatric wing, areas for therapy programs, court rooms, wings for school classes, a gym, a library, solitary confinement cells, laboratories, and religious practice areas.
"The transfer of the Korydallos jail to Aspropyrgos will create a new prison policy for Greece and create the right conditions for prisoners in correctional facilities that are based on European and international standards," Economou said.
