Lesvos fire rekindles, leads to repeat evacuation order of Vrissa

The community of Vrissa on the western part of Lesvos island was evacuated for a second time on Wednesday, following a rekindling of the fire that started on Sunday.

Originally starting in a forested area on Sunday morning, the fire led to the evacuation of the community between Vrissa and Polychnitos. Residents returned to their homes on Wednesday morning, before the rekindling of the fire in the afternoon and a new order for evacuation by the mayor of Western Lesvos. Strong winds have helped the fire spread toward the south and southwest.

Evacuation orders were sent by text messages through the 112 European-wide emergency number.
