EODY on leprosy case in Greece

A 65-year-old woman suffering from Hansen's disease (popularly known as leprosy) is being treated in hospital in good condition, according to an announcement on Wednesday.
An active surveillance of her contacts is currently underway in case they develop any symptoms of the disease, the National Public Health Organisation (EODY) said. EODY noted that similar cases have appeared in the country in the past, which have been successfully treated.
 The disease is caused by slow-growing bacteria called Mycobacterium leprae. It can affect the nerves, skin, eyes, and lining of the nose (nasal mucosa). With early diagnosis and treatment, the disease can be cured with antibiotics.
The diseases is not very contagious and the patients undergoing treatment are in able to continue their normal activities.
