Israeli ambassador to Greece welcomes decision for return of Jewish community archives

The return of the Greek Jewish community archives to Greece was welcomed by Israeli Ambassador to Greece Yossi Amrani on Thursday.

In a statement on Facebook, Ambassasdor Amrani said, "We are excited and pleased from the news about the return of the Jewish archives to Greece," and said the return of the archives is "happening on the bicentennial of Greece’s Independence and during the Greek Presidency of IHRA," the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance.

Russia announced it would return the archives following a meeting between Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Wednesday. The archives of the Greek Jewish communities had been stolen by the Nazis during World War II and ended up in Russia.

As the ambassador of Israel added, "President Putin’s decision will help educate future generations, in Greece and beyond, on the rich Jewish life in Greece, the immense contribution of the Thessaloniki Jewish Community and the disaster of the Holocaust. The return of the archives and the commitment and determination of Prime Mitsotakis and his government to build a Holocaust Museum in Thessaloniki represent the victory of the spirit and humanity over the barbarity and atrocities of that terrible period in our life and history."
