President Sakellaropoulou lays wreath at Spiros Moustaklis memorial

President Katerina Sakellaropoulou laid a wreath at the bust of late military officer Spiros Moustaklis on Saturday, marking the 47th anniversary of the restoration of democracy in Greece.
In a ceremony held at Eleftheria Park (Freedom Park), at the former EAT-ESA detention center in central Athens, the Greek President was honoring the end of the country's seven-year military junta, which was followed by the formation of the country's national unity government on July 24 in 1974 under Prime Minister Konstantinos Karamanlis.
Moustaklis was arrested by the junta for his anti-dictatorial struggle and was left paralyzed as a result of continued torturing at EAT-ESA for 47 days.
President Sakellaropoulou will also be hosting a reception at the Presidential Mansion on Saturday evening in honor of the restoration of democracy.
At the mansion's gardens, Sakellaropoulou will receive political leaders, ministers, Greek resistance movement representatives, personalities of the Arts & Letters, health experts, doctors and nurses, and members of the armed forces, among others.
Among the personalities invited to the reception is Magda Fyssa - mother of rapper Pavlos Fyssas who was murdered by members of former far-right party Golden Dawn in 2013, Stavroula Axarlian - mother of Thanos Axarlian who was murdered by terrorist group November 17 in 1992, and Sofia Bekatorou - veteran Olympic champion who in 2020 went public with her sexual abuse by a Sailing Federation official in 1998.
