Dozens of unions, labour centres to join October 2 strike proposed by GSEE

Dozens of labour centres and union federations around Greece had on Wednesday announced their intention to join a 24-hour strike on October 2, the date proposed by the temporary leadership of the General Confederation of Employees of Greece (GSEE), in protest against the government's omnibus development bill.
Some, such as the Chania Labour Centre, moved the day of strike action to October 2 after the government said it was pushing back the date for the vote on the bill, which will no longer be fast tracked but tabled at the end of the month using normal procedures.
According to GSEE, more labour centres and federations are expected to join the strike action.
GSEE, the country's largest trade union federation representing private-sector workers, is currently unable to declare strike action after the election of its new leadership was prevented at the last GSEE conference, due to disagreements between trade union factions. Its temporary administration has recommended an October 2 date for the strike after it became clear that the government will not fast-track the omnibus development bill, which also contains articles concerning labour issues.
